Report type – Time Expended by code table

The Time expended by code table report shows total library staff time expended on the Y axis showing time by Individual requests (no dependencies), Parent, Child (created by Linked using parent/child relationship), Linked to, Linked from (created by Linked using Linked to/from relationship), Primary and Sub task (created by Create a sub task), and the code table that you have chosen on the X axis (in this case Staff was selected).

Be careful when selecting the parameters for this report.  It reports questions by the allocated staff member and the allocated staff member’s location.
Date type is Closed date by default as it is the most sensible choice when you want to know the cost of developing answers, but Received date is sensible for measuring incoming workload.  Journal activity is used when you want to look at the questions worked on during the selected period measure.  This “Time expended by Code table” report is reporting on total time spent on that question (no matter when it was spent).  If you want to know what your staff have done during this month only, use the “Journal reporting” report.

It allows you to analyse the amount of staff time spent on various activities by your staff.
Selecting Date type of Closed date will report on all staff time spent on questions closed during the period (no matter how far into the past the time was spent).
Selecting Date type of Received date will report on all staff time spent on questions received during the period.
Selecting Date type of Journal activity will report on all staff time spent on any question worked on during the period and is usually used to report on all staff time used during the period.

The Time expended report is only available for the Questions and DeskStats data sources separately. To obtain a total of all staff time expended, run the Time expended report for Questions, and then run it for DeskStats, and add the results together.

Other useful ways to report on the work done on Service questions vs Sub tasks is to choose “Service type” in the X or Y axis parameter of the Code table by Code table report, or to use the Relationship type by code table report.
